Rim closed on Vulcans

The University of Hawaii at Hilo fell to the University  of Alaska Fairbank 67-42 in an NCA A Division II West Region game in the UHH gymnasium.

The Vulcans (0-2) had a hard night from the field hitting just over 23-percent of their shots (13 of 56). Jamiea McDuffie nailed the Vulcans' only 3-pointer out of 18 tries.

“We had been improving at a good rate especially over the last couple of weeks,” said UHH Head Coach David Kaneshiro. “For us not to play as well as we've been practicing is disappointing.

"We might have been a little anxious trying to get everything back at once. We let our bad offense affect the effort we gave on defense. We just need to be mentally tougher in that respect."

Junior guard Kirsten Shimizu led the way with 17 points. She was 3 of 12 from the field and 11 of 11 at the freethrow line. McDuffie chipped in eight points while Natalie Mata had six points and seven rebounds.
