The University of Hawaii at Hilo jumped out of the box with a quick 3-0 lead but eventually fell hard to Dixie State College 14-5 in the first round of the NCAA Division II West 2 Region in St. George, UT.
“It's always nice to get out to a lead but you can never count out the offensive team that Dixie is,” UHH Head Coach
Jaime Wallin said. “We needed to do a better job of getting ahead of hitters, falling behind really put us in a bad spot.
“The bottom line is there was a lot of game left to play.”
One batter into the game, the Vulcans' offense got rolling with a pair of line-drive singles by
Rebecca Lee and
Colleen Aubrey. After
Emily Greene was tagged by a pitch,
Brandy Wilson's single drove in a run.
Melanie Morelos capped the inning with a 2-run single.
Their turn on the field didn't go as smoothly as the Red Storm answered with five runs on five hits to take the lead.
After giving up another run, the Vulcans came back with two runs in the fourth on Lee's single and a wild-pitch.
The Vulcans second round opponent is Sonoma State University who lost 1-0 to Cal State Dominguez Hills in the first game.
“I feel confident in our offense but there are adjustments that we're going to make for tomorrow,” Wallin said.
