WAIKOLOA, Hawai`i--The first-day leaders swapped spots after round two was said and done at the 26th annual Amer Ari Invitational at the Waikoloa Beach Resort on Friday.
USC moved into the top spot after improving five strokes on the second day, sliding past Thursday leader Texas Tech by one shot. The Trojans sit with a 36-hole total of 541 (-35) with the Red Raiders at 542 (-34). As a team, defending Amer Ari champion Southern California had a Friday total of 268, Texas Tech 272.
Those two squads have opened up a sizeable gap on the rest of the field. Tied for third place is Stanford and Colorado, both at 560, which is -16 under par. Defending NCAA champion Oregon rounds out the top five at 561 (-15).Â
Host UH Hilo improved four strokes today with a team total of 300. They are +28 for the tournament, nine shots back of the only other non-Division I team in the event, fellow Division II member Chico State.
In the medalist hunt, USC's Rico Hoey moved into the top slot on the leaderboard, shooting a 63 (-9) today to move to -14 for the tournament. Hoey's 63 was the low round of the day and for the tournament.
Sitting one stroke back of that threesome is the world's No. 1 ranked amateur, Standford's Maverick McNealy (-10) and round one co-leader Jared du Toit of Arizona State.
For the Vulcans,
