» Vulcans is the nickname for ALL Hawai‘i Hilo athletics teams. "Lady Vulcans" is NOT used to distinguish the women's teams/student-athletes and is discouraged from use. The Vulcan nickname was adopted in 1966 and refers to the god of fire (including the fire of volcanoes, deserts, metalworking and the forge) in Roman mythology.
» Respect the ‘Okina. The symbol often found between letters in words such as Hawai‘i, O‘ahu, Ho‘olulu or ‘ohana is NOT an apostraphe. It is an ‘okina that serves as a glottal stop and is one of 13 letters comprising the native Hawaiian language alphabet.
While there are several Hawaiian language fonts available online, for simplicity and consistency across digital and print platforms, Hawai‘i Hilo Athletics uses the left single quotation mark to denote an ‘okina.

» #ImuaVulcans is the official hashtag for all things related to Hawai‘i Hilo athletics. I mua means to move forward in Hawaiian language and is famously associated with King Kamehameha I as it was his rally call during times of war. "I mua e na poki‘i a inu i ka wai ‘awa‘awa, ‘a‘ohe hope e ho‘i mai ai," translates to: "forward my young brothers [and sisters] and drink of the bitter waters (of battle) there is no turning back (until victory is secured)."
