HILO, Hawai'i – The Annual KTA Super Stores Vulcan Fever drive kicked off with a $15,800 check presentation reflecting funds earned in 2015 by the University of Hawai'i at Hilo athletic programs.

In its thirteenth year, Score for Scholarships awards funds to the Vulcans Athletic program based on per-game achievement by its student athletes.

Each volleyball service ace or basketball 3-pointer generates $50 while each soccer goal earns $100. In baseball and softball, each double earns $50, a triple is $75, a homerun is $100 and each strikeout a pitcher records is $25.

The month-long drive encourages customers to purchase specially labeled products from participating brands. The funds raised support the KTA Score for Scholarships Endowment Fund, which goes toward offsetting costs for tuition, room, board, books and other academic support services for student athletes. Over $200,000 has been raised so far.

ABOUT KTA SUPER STORES

KTA Super Stores started in 1916, as a modest 500 square-foot grocery and dry goods store, by Koichi & Taniyo Taniguchi. Since then, KTA has grown to a six-store chain, serving the residents of Hawai`i Island.

KTA's legacy would not have been possible without the support of the community and KTA's hard working and dedicated staff. "It has been quite a journey. Together we have persevered through natural disasters, world wars, recessions, and some truly uncertain times. I believe the special bond found in the people of our communities is truly the essence of the Aloha Spirit. We always come together to solve the problems with a clear desire to create a better future for our Island and families," said Barry Taniguchi, Chairman of KTA Super Stores.
