HILO--Visiting Chaminade used the same formula in all three sets to post a 25-20, 25-20, 25-18 victory over Hawai`i Hilo on Monday night at Vulcan Gymnasium.
The Silverswords owned the final points in each set, breaking open tight games to pull away for the Pacific West Conference victory. Chaminade improved to 9-8 overall and is now 3-5 in conference action. The Vulcans dropped to 5-7 on the year and to 3-4 in the PacWest.
Chaminade's Emma Tecklenburg had 14 kills to lead all players, hitting a sizzling .462. For the match, the Silverswords hit an efficient .320, with Kim Spring adding 12 kills and 13 digs.
Siera Green led UHH with 11 kills and hit .333.
Marley Strand-Nicolaisen had nine kills and three block assists and
Mina Grant had 14 digs to lead all players in that column.
In the first set, UHH led 16-15, but Chaminade scored eight of the next nine points to pull away (25-20). They hit .343 in the first set, led by Tecklenburg's six kills. The Vulcans hit just .095 and were undone late in the set by a series of attack and service errors. In the second set, the two clubs were tied at 19-19 when the Silverswords pulled away. An ace by the visitors and a UHH service error closed out the set (25-21).
In the third set, the Vuls led 18-17 but Chaminade scored the final eight points of the night. Tecklenburg had kills for three of the final four points, and an ace by Spring accounted the other.Â
The match was the first of eight straight home games for the Vulcans. They will return to the court on Thursday to host one of the top teams in the PacWest, Concordia (16-2 overall). Start time is 7 p.m.
