HILO--The Dominican Penguins, who saw their six-match win streak halted on Thursday, started a new one on Saturday night at the expense of Hawai`i Hilo, 30-28, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19.
The Penguins have now won seven of their last eight matches to improve to 10-3 in the Pacific West Conference and 14-7 overall. The Vulcans fell to 5-7 in conference action and are 7-10 on the year.Â
Haylee Roberts had a career-high 17 kills and
Marley Strand-Nicolaisen added the same to pace UHH, who lost their second straight match.Â
The two squads played a wild first set. With the score tied at 16-16, the Vulcans took a 20-17 lead when
Kyndra Trevino-Scott put down three balls in a row. Strand-Nicolaisen tacked on a kill a few moments later to give the Vuls a 24-22 lead and two set points. But the Penguins came back with a Madeline Powelson kill and a block to tie it up at 24 each. The clubs traded one-point leads until a Kate Even kill and a Hannah Smith service ace gave the Penguins a 30-28 win.
Dominican led almost the entire second set, keeping the Vulcans at arm's length before finishing out at 25-21. But the home team battled back in the third to stay alive. Roberts had six of her kills in the do or die game and the Vulcans got good bench play when
Mariya Heidenrich zipped in an ace and
Kayla Balezentis had a kill to put her team up five points. Two Penguin attack errors gave UHH the set, 25-20.Â
In the fourth set, the teams were tied at 10-10, but Dominican scored five of the next six points and never trailed again. Susanna Pilkerton had two kills during that run and Zoe Burgess had an ace to fuel the visitors, who would go on to take the set and the match, 25-19.
Dominican had four players with double-figure kill numbers, led by Pilkerton's 14. Hannah Smith had 52 assists and Amanda Lee had 32 digs. The defensive-minded Penguins had 99 digs as a team.
Roberts hit .357 in her fifth match of the season since becoming cleared to play. Strand-Nicolaisen had 21 digs to go with her 17 kills.
Sienna Davis had 43 assists.
The Vulcans will be back on the court less than 48 from now, hosting Azusa Pacific in a 5 p.m. match. On Think Pink Night, all fans that come to the game wearing pink, will be admitted for free.
