KEA`AU—Hope sprung eternal for the Hawai`i Hilo men's soccer team on Senior Night at Kamehameha School, at least for the first 25 minutes of the match on Saturday under the lights.
The Vulcans scored the first two goals of the night but Point Loma won the evening with a 3-2 Pacific West Conference victory. The Sea Lions improved to 8-5-4 in conference play and to 7-4-1 overall, while UHH dropped to 0-10-1 in the PacWest and 1-13-1 on the year.
The Vulcans scored the first two goals of the match for the first time this season, stunning the visiting Sea Lions, who were playing their fourth match on the islands. Five and a half minutes after kick-off, Senior
Anthony Novella scored his first goal of the season, heel-kicking a ball sent at him by
Jake Sagami. The Vulcans led 1-0 for the first time since their opening match of the year against Westminster.
Hawaii Hilo made it 2-0 with 19 minutes to go in the half when
Omar Machado found the net, sliding to tap in a shot by
Daniel Baumgartner that banged off the bar. The Vulcans now had a two-goal lead for the first time in 2016.
But the Sea Lions made sure that didn't last long. They scored twice in a four minute span, first by Eduardo Gallardo from 20 yards out and then Nico Tagaloa tied it with a short shot flipped over UHH keeper
Cassidy Dixon with 10:32 to go in the half. The teams went into intermission knotted at 2-2.
Dixon made a number of critical saves, one in the first half and had two more punch outs early in the second. But moments later the match turned when Hawaii Hilo's
Jonathan Garcia was tagged with a red card in the 60
th minute. The Sea Lions quickly capitalized on the 10-man Vulcan line-up when Mitch Wheelon fired in a bullet from near the left sideline just a few minutes later to make it 3-2.
Dixon made a few more circus saves on the defensive end, but the Vulcans were short-handed on the offensive side and didn't have any more great scoring opportunities.
It was the final home match for three UHH seniors: Novella, Bennjamin Siemers and
Edward Torrison.
The Vulcans will play their final two matches of the season on the road next week, traveling to Fresno Pacific (Nov. 3) and to Holy Names (Nov. 5).
