Lancers triple up Vulcans, 3-0

KEAAU—With a 3-0 win over Hawai`I Hilo on Saturday night at Paiea Stadium, the California Baptist Lancers snapped two different streaks.

The Lancers got the monkey off their back with their first road win of the year, and they also corrected a two-match losing streak.

California Baptist improved to 6-3 overall with the win and evened their Pacific West Conference mark at 2-2. Hawai`I Hilo falls to 1-8-1 this year and they are 0-5-1 in league play after this match played under the lights at Kamehameha School.

CBU's Luca Tschaidse punched the ball into the net after a wild scramble halfway through the first half to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Aidan Apoldaca passed to Junior Guerra in a pack of people in front of the goal. Guerra then pushed the ball to Tschaidse who knocked it into the left corner of the net.

The Lancers would get insurance with just over 18 minutes left in the match when Kyle Pizano came off the bench and drilled a shot from 15 yards out over the head of a leaping Cassidy Dixon (UHH keeper) to give the Lancers a 2-0 margin.

California Baptist added one more score in the final minutes on a converted penalty kick by Matthew Bernard to account for the final tally of 3-0.

CBU was on the attack most of the night, firing 21 shots towards UHH keeper Dixon, 11 of them on goal. The Vulcans had just three shots on the night, all of them on goal, and all during a three minute span late in the first half. One of those shots, by Daniel Baumgartner, took a diving save by Noah Oyler to keep it out of the net.

Oyler picked up the shutout and had three saves. Dixon finished with eight saves in the contest.

The Vulcans will be right back here at Kamehameha School on Thursday afternoon, taking on PacWest leader Dixie State. Start time will be 12:30 p.m.
