Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Falcons wear down Vuls, 88-80

SEATTLE, Wash.—Host Seattle Pacific took advantage of Hawaii Hilo foul troubles and held off a feisty Vulcan team down the stretch to win the last game of the Sodexo Collegiate Classic at Brougham Pavilion, 88-80.

The Vulcans leave the classic with a 1-1 record, while the Falcons improved to 2-0.

Parker Farris, despite sitting during a nine-minute portion of the second half with four fouls, led all scorers with 27 points. Darius Johnson-Wilson added 21 and also pulled down nine rebounds.

The Vulcans blitzed out to a 9-0 lead in the first 3:20 of the game. Johnson-Wilson hit a soft 10-foot jumper moments into the contest and followed that up with another score in the paint seconds later. Randan Berninobis nailed a three-pointer and Farris added a field goal to quiet the home crowd and force an SPU timeout. The Falcons finally got their first bucket three and half minutes in on a Joe Rasmussen bank-in.

Another Johnson-Wilson basket made it 11-2 less than four minutes into the contest, but the Falcons began to warm up after that. They scored 11 of the next 14 points, and the two teams traded buckets for the rest of the half. A Farris three-point play, his second of the game, pulled UHH to within one point with 26 seconds left at 46-45, and that's where they stood at the halftime break.

A Johnson-Wilson basket and Farris free throw gave the Vulcans a 49-46 lead early in the second half, but Farris collected his fourth foul of the game at the 17:51 mark and that would take a major weapon out of the line-up for a huge chunk of the second half. After a 53-50 Vulcan lead, SPU outscored the Vuls 15-5 to take a seven-point lead (65-58) and they would never trail again although it wouldn't be without drama.

Farris returned with 9:33 remaining and hit three consecutive baskets to pull the Vuls to within four points (71-67). Ryley Callaghan nailed a trey at the top of the key one possession later to make it 72-69 and then was fouled on a drive to the hoop and hit one free throw (72-70). Twice the Vulcans pulled to within one point—at 76-75 on a Farris free throw and at 78-77 with 1:38 left on a Ryan Reyes charity toss, but a Rasmussen trey with 29 seconds left made it 83-77 and the hosts then hit free throws down the stretch to seal the deal.

Berninobis was also in double figures for the Vulcans with 10 points, before fouling out with 3:17 left. Callaghan had six assists and no turnovers and Farris handed out five assists.

Rasmussen, a 6-8 post, had 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Coleman Wooten, who was named the tournament MVP, had 19 points and 12 rebounds. The taller Falcons, ranked No. 10 in the west region pre-season poll, out-rebounded the Vulcans, 47-31.

Farris and Johnson-Wilson were named to the All-Classic team.

The Vulcans will wrap up their Pacific Northwest trip with a non-conference game at Saint Martin's on Tuesday in Lacey, Wash. Start time is 7 p.m. Pacific (5 pm Hawaii).
