Sliverswords take down Vulcans again

HONOLULU—After dropping two sets that could have gone either way, the Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans ran out of gas in the third in falling to host Chaminade, 28-26, 25-23, 25-14 on Saturday night at McCabe Gymnasium.

The win was the fifth in six matches for Chaminade, who improved to 14-11 on the season and to 8-8 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans saw their modest two-match winning streak end and are now 9-12 on the year and 7-9 in conference action. The win for Chaminade gave them the season sweep in the season series.

UHH's Marley Strand-Nicolaisen led all players with 19 kills. Teammate Haylee Roberts added 10. That duo accounted for 29 of the Vulcans' 33 total kills.

The first set was a battle, with neither team leading by more than four points throughout. The two teams were tied at 21-21, 22-22, 23-23, 24-24, 25-25 and 26-26. Finally a Emma Tecklenburg kill and a UHH attack error gave the Silverswords the 28-26 win.

The second set was much different, but still produced a similar outcome with a 25-23 Chaminade win. The Silverswords led for most of the set, going on four different 3-0 mini runs to pull away from each Vulcan challenge. Then the hosts built a 24-17 lead only to see the visitors rally back with six straight points, with Strand-Nicolaisen and Roberts causing damage on offense and Roberts and Armani Moultrie combining for two of the points on blocks. But a Chaminade putaway by Daise LaBrie ended the set and took the wind out of UHH's sails.

The third set got away quickly. The Silverswords scored five straight points in the opening moments and later scored 9 of 11 to roll to a 25-14 verdict.

In addition to her kill totals, Strand-Nicolaisen also had 12 digs. Kaila Lizama led the Vuls with 13 digs, followed by Mina Grant with 12. Roberts had four block assists. Tecklenburg led Chaminade with 13 kills.

Hawai`i Hilo will travel to northern California next week for a three-match swing, beginning with a Friday night (Nov. 11) match at Holy Names.
