Vulcans turn tables on 'Swords, 79-66

HILO, Hawai`i—And this is why they play the game.

A 25-point loser to this same team less than two weeks ago, Hawai`i Hilo reversed the tables on Saturday night at Vulcan Gym, defeating Chaminade, 79-66 in front of 697 fans in UHH's on-campus facility.

The Vulcans, who lost to the Silverswords 95-70 in Honolulu, moved to 2-2 in the Pacific West Conference with the upset win and are now 3-5 overall. Chaminade is also 2-2 in league action and dropped to 4-5 on the year.

Parker Farris hit a season-high seven three-pointers and scored 28 points to pace the home team. The Silverswords, who average almost 80 points a game, were held to their lowest point total of the season, sans a 104-61 loss to No. 4 North Carolina.

"Our week of practice got us this win," said Vulcan head coach GE Coleman after the game. "We determined the tempo tonight. We learned from our mistakes in Honolulu and didn't allow them to get into a rhythm."

Hawaii Hilo had a 45-26 rebound edge and held Chaminade to 40 percent shooting from the field. Four other players joined Farris in double figures, led by Brian Ishola's second straight double-double (15 points, 13 rebounds). Freshman Eric Wattree had 12 points and seven rebounds, Ryley Callaghan added 11 and Darius Johnson-Wilson added 10.

UHH never trailed in the game against a squad that outscored them 57-33 in the second half  in Oahu.

Less than three minutes into the contest, they jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Chaminade didn't score until Austin Pope's dunk at the 16:10 mark.

UHH pushed the lead to 10 points (19-9) on Ishola's rebound basket at 10:45, kicking off a 17-3 run that was capped by a Ferris three-pointer with 4:20 to go (29-12). Another Farris trey right before the half gave the Vulcans an improbable 32-16 lead at intermission.

Chaminade shot just 26 percent in the first 20 minutes and were 0-7 from three-point range. It was Chaminade's lowest 20-minute output of the year.
Things were not quite as easy for the Vulcans in the second half.

The Vulcans took a 21-point lead just a few minutes into the second half (37-16) but the Silverswords wouldn't go away. They began to apply the pressure on defense, forcing turnovers and to compound measures the Vulcans eventually had three players with four fouls each.

Chaminade cut the lead to 11 points with under two minutes to play, but UHH hit free throws and controlled the ball down the stretch to hold on for the win.

"We controlled the boards tonight, especially on the offensive end," Coleman added. "That gave us 12 extra possessions.

"That is one of the best offensive teams in the conference. If they are in rhythm, they will blow you out of the gym, like they did to us before."

Rohndell Goodwin led the Silverswords with 21 points.

The Vulcans will now step outside of conference for one match-up, taking on Seattle Pacific next Friday night at the Civic Auditorium—in another rematch. The Falcons topped UHH 88-80 on Nov. 12 in Seattle.
