HILO, Hawai`i—Playing their third game in five days on the Hawaiian islands, visiting Dominican showed no signs of fatigue in racing to a 85-66 women's basketball victory over Hawai`i Hilo on Monday night at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
The victory moved Dominican's record to 7-5 on the season and to 3-2 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans dropped to 1-7 on the year and 1-4 on conference play.
Sandra Ikeora had 22 points and 17 rebounds for Dominican, including eight boards on the offensive end, before fouling out with just over three minutes to play.
Amber Vaughn had a UHH career high 11 points off the bench to lead the Vulcans.
The Penguins set the tone early, charging out to a 7-0 lead in the first 2:45 of the game. The Vulcans got on the board 45 seconds later on Vaughn's first field goal of the season, and the junior transfer hit a three-pointer soon after that to make it 13-6, Penguins.
But the visitors would continue to apply the pressure at both ends, pushing out to a 26-14 margin at the end of the first quarter. In that opening 10 minutes, Dominican shot 60 percent from the field.
The Penguins put up 23 more points in the second quarter, giving them 49 for the half (49-30), the most scored by an opponent this season. They hit half of their field goal attempts in the second quarter, owned the boards by eight (24-16) and had five blocked shots.
The Vuls made a run at the Penguins partway through the third quarter, pulling to within 15 points (61-46) after another Vaughn trey, but Dominican answered with back-to-back three-pointers of their own from Alyssa Lorenzo, an inside basket by Ikeora and a three-ball from Alanna Scott to cap a 11-0 run and effectively salt the game away.
Despite the losing effort, it was a season-high in points scored for UHH. Joining Vaughn in double figures with ten points each was
Vanessa Mancera and
Sydney Mercer.
Kim Schmelz added nine points and seven caroms.
Scott had 17 points and seven boards to support Ikeora's numbers for the Penguins. Ikeora had also two assists, two blocked shots and three steals to go with her 22 points and 17 rebounds. That helped her team to a 53-38 rebound advantage over their hosts.
Hawaii Hilo will take the rest of the holidays off from games, resuming play on January 3 at home against Azusa Pacific.
