Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hawaii Pacific settles the issue early vs. Hawaii Hilo

HONOLULU—This one escalated in a hurry.

Hawaii Pacific jumped out to a 20-2 lead four minutes into the game and rolled on from there, remaining unbeaten with a 104-78 men's basketball victory over Hawai`i Hilo on Friday night at the Blaisdell Center.

The Sharks improved to 7-0 on the season and are now 1-0 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans dropped to 0-2 in conference play and are now 1-5 on the year.

Parker Farris led the Vulcans with 27 points on the night and he had six rebounds. Brian Ishola was also in double figures with 15 points and five boards. Ryley Callaghan added 10 counters.

The Sharks jumped out to a 12-0 lead three minutes after the opening tip, before Ishola got the Vuls on the board with a short jumper. But HPU scored eight points in the next 60 seconds, hitting a pair of three-pointers and a jumper to get to a 20-2 margin with just 4:09 having ticked off the clock.

The home team knocked down seven treys in the first nine minutes, and before the first half was over had drained 11 of 19 from beyond the arch. They shot 58 percent on regular shots and forced 11 Vulcan turnovers in the first 20 minutes. The Sharks went to the locker room with a 56-28 halftime lead.

The Vulcans played the Sharks more evenly after the break, but the damage was already done. HPU hit only one more three-pointer in the game (12-of-28) but finished with a 40-33 rebound advantage and had 10 steals in the victory.

Jordan Martin led five Sharks in double figures with 25 points.

UHH will play their home opener on Sunday, hosting Notre Dame de Namur on campus at Vulcan Gym. Start time is 3:30 p.m.
