HONOLULU--Host Hawai`i Pacific shot 57 percent from three-point range while visiting Hawai`i Hilo was stone cold all over the court, adding up to a 67-36 Shark win on Friday night at the Blaisdell Center in Pacific West Conference women's basketball.
It was the conference opener for HPU, and they also improved to 3-2 overall. The Vulcans are now 1-1 in the PacWest and 1-3 on the year.
UHH shot just .236 from the field and converted just five of 23 shots from beyond the arc. The Sharks shot 52 percent from the field and knocked down an efficient 8-of-14 three-point launches. Breanna Mackenzie accounted for half of those (4-for-5) for a game-high 18 points.
The Vulcans were only down a pair of points at the end of the first quarter (12-10). A trey by
Alexa Jacobs tied the game at 10-10 with 54 seconds left, but that would be as close as her team would get the rest of the night.
The Sharks went on a 7-0 run to start the second quarter and took a 28-20 halftime lead. Five seconds into the third quarter, Mackenzie nailed a trey and then hit another a couple of minutes later. UHH did cut the margin to six points (34-28) with 5:34 to go in the third, but HPU went on a 11-0 run to close out the period (45-28). The Sharks went on to score 22 points in the fourth quarter to finish the deal.
Lauren Hong led the Vuls with seven points and
Asia Smith led the board battle with seven. The Vulcans played their third consecutive game without 2015-16 leading scorer
Kim Schmelz, who is out with an injury.
The Vulcans will return home for a Sunday afternoon game vs. Notre Dame de Namur. Tip off is scheduled for 1 pm and the game will be played on campus at Vulcan Gymnasium.
