HILO, Hawaii – University of Hawaii at Hilo volleyball and basketball student-athletes participated in today's Kapiolani Elementary's quarter-ending Sports Day.
"It's about giving back to the community and reaching out to the younger children," UH Hilo volleyball player
Mariya Heidenrich said. "This is good incentive in that if they do good in the classroom their hard work pays off."
Over 370 elementary students, grades K-6, participated in basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball and Zumba/cheerleading on the school's campus and were led by various community volunteers.
"It's the end of the quarter incentive but it is the first time we are doing a sports day," Kapiolani's Project Coordinator
Kerinne Smith said. "It's our positive behavior support program. It's has a school wide impact and promotes a positive school climate. We make it a priority that our students show respect, are responsible and safe."
