Okamura, Vulcans get first win

NAMPA, Idaho--Sophomore Tiera Arakawa scored twice early in the second half and goalkeeper Jenna Hufford didn't allow a goal, helping lead the Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans to a 2-0 victory over Northwest Nazarene on Saturday at the NNU Soccer Field.

The win gives the Vulcans their first victory of the season (1-1) and also serves as the inaugral notch in the belt for Gene Okamura, who made his collegiate head coaching debut on this trip. With the loss, the host Crusaders fell to 1-3 in 2016.

After a scoreless first half, Arakawa scored on a penalty kick just 20 seconds after the break. Less than 10 minutes later (54:58), she tallied her second goal of the match and third of the young season to give the Vulcans all the insurance that they would need on a day where their defense was stellar.

Hufford and her teammates kept the Crusaders out of the scoring column the rest of the way. The senior keeper recorded the shutout with five saves.

"It feels good of course to get the first win, for me and the team," Okamura said. "But mostly I am happy with how we played overall today on both sides of the ball. We had a good couple of matches and it gives us something to build on heading into conference play."

UHH had 17 shots on the afternoon, six by Arakawa, eight of them on goal. The Crusaders sent 18 shots towards the posts, with five of them on goal.

The Vulcans will host Chaminade in their 2016 home opener and Pacific West Conference debut next Saturday, Sept. 17, at Kamehameha School. Start time will be 3 p.m.
