Crusaders double up Vulcans, 4-2

NAMPA, Idaho--Host Northwest Nazarene broke open a close match with a trio of second half goals to defeat Hawai'i Hilo 4-2 in the final match of the Vulcan's three-match Idaho road trip.

The young Vulcan squad will return to the Big Island with an 0-3 mark while NNU moves to 3-1-1 on the season.

The Crusaders held a scant 1-0 lead at halftime at Finkbeiner Park, using a goal at 27:03 by Ebu Camara to put the home team on top. But the larger, physical team from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) added a goal quickly after intermission (47:22) on a strike by Rafael Junqueira to make it 2-0. Junqueira added another score 20 minues later (67:01), and Camara then kept pace with his teammate by adding his second goal of the day in the 77th minute to make it 4-0.

But the Vulcans showed some fight with a pair of goals of their own in the final five minutes of the match. Freshman Daniel Baumgartner tallied his first collegiate goal (85:19) to break up the shutout, firing a shot at the NNU keeper from 16 yards out--only to see it bound back to him on the block, where he re-deposited it in the goal.

With under a minute to play, sophomore Trenton Hooper took a pass from Bennjamin Siemers, splitting the defense for another score to make it 4-2.

"I was proud with how we never gave up and kept fighting," said UHH head coach Gene Okamura. "That is a very good and very experienced team."

The Crusaders have 13 players returning this year, including a number of players from their 2014 NCAA tournament squad. They finished 12-6-1 last season, good for third place in the GNAC.

NNU had 18 shots in the match with 11 on goal, while the Vuls fired 14 shots with seven of them on goal.

The Vulcans will now return home and get ready for their Pacific West Conference opener on Saturday (Sept. 17) against Chaminade. Start time for the match, to be played at Kamehameha School, is 12:30 p.m.
