SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--Johnny Mathis recorded the classic song "I left my heart in San Francisco" over 50 years ago. Today, another Jonny broke the hearts of the University of Hawaii Hilo men's soccer team in San Francisco.
Academy of Art's Jonny Navarro punched in a shot just a little over two minutes into the second overtime period to deal the Vulcans a heartbreakiing 1-0 loss on Saturday afternoon in Pacific West Conference soccer action at City College of San Francisco. The victory was the first of the year for the Urban Knights (1-5-1) and they moved to 1-1 in league play. The Vulcans are now 1-5-0 on the year and fell to 0-2 in the PWC.
Navarro brought to a halt a defensive battle at the 1:02.21 mark, just two minutes and 21 seconds into the second Sudden Victory overtime period. He picked up a Urban Knight shot that had bounced off the cross bar and dropped it into the goal past UHH keeper
Joshua Jasper. That was tough luck and a hard pill to swallow for the Vulcans and Jasper, who had played terrific defense on the day. Jasper finished with three saves on the afternoon.
Both squads had just four shots on goal over the 102 minutes of play. Academy of Art had 16 shots towards the mark and the Vuls had 10.
Kevin Mendez recorded the shutout for the Urban Knights, his first of the season.
"I was happy to see us bounce back with a spirited effort after a tough outing a couple of days ago," said UHH head coach
Gene Okamura, whose team lost to Dominican on Thursday. "We just need to find a way to get our offense going."
Okamura's team will wrap up its bay area trip on Monday with a tussle at Notre Dame de Namur. Start time will be 12:30 pm Pacific (9:30 am Hawaii time).
