Deja Vu in the Bay Area for Vulcans, 2 OT tie, 1-1

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--For head coach Gene Okamura and his University of Hawaii Hilo soccer team, it must seem like deja vu all over again.

For the second time in as many outings in the bay area, the Vulcans had to settle for a double overtime 1-1 tie, this time to the Academy of Art on Saturday afternoon at the City College of San Francisco field. On Thursday, they finished with the same result versus Dominian.

The deadlock leaves the Vulcans at 2-1-2 overall and 0-0-2 in Pacific West Conference play. The Urban Knights are now 0-6-1 on the year and 0-1-1 in conference action.

Just like against Dominican, UHH scored first. In the 24th minute, senior Abcde Zoller picked up her first goal of the season to give the Vulcans a lead that would hold through the halftime break and late into the contest. But at 77:57, the Urban Knights would tie the match on Laney Haviland's score (1-1). That would send the match into the first 10-minute overtime, where the Vuls would send three shots towards the goal that had to be saved, while Academy of Art fired two shots that UHH senior goalkeeper Jenna Hufford had to stop.

In the second Sudden Victory overtime, Hufford and AAU keeper Maggie Alikpala were called on to make a save each before time ran out.

Again, like against Dominican, Hufford recorded a season-high eight saves and gave up just the one goal. There were no shortage of shots and opportunities on either side as UHH sent 19 shots towards the mark, 11 of them on goal. The Urban Knights had 20 shots, nine of them on goal. Kayla Santiago had four of those shots (three on goal) for the Vuls.

Hawaii Hilo will have one more shot in northern California to crack the win column when they take on Nortre Dame de Namur on Monday in Oakland. Start time is schedule for 3 p.m. Pacific, noon Hawaii time.
