First place Lancers run from Vulcans, 81-55

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—No. 8 nationally ranked California Baptist lived up to their hype and then some with a 81-55 win over Hawai`i Hilo on Monday night at Van Dyne Arena.

With the win, the Lancers picked up their 19th consecutive victory to improve to 13-0 in the Pacific West Conference and 22-2 on the year. It was also their 27th straight win at home. The Vulcans, who had won four of their six games in the month of January, fell to 5-7 in conference action and 5-10 on the year.

Asia Smith led the Vulcans with 12 points and she also had seven rebounds. Alexa Jacobs had the first double-double of her career with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Vulcans grabbed an early lead on a three-pointer by Vanessa Mancera just 35 seconds into the contest (3-2) and increased the margin to 5-2 just a little over a minute into the game on a Kim Schmelz basket.

But the Lancers responded with a 12-0 run and moved out to a 26-11 margin at the end of the first quarter. They would lead the rest of the way.

They added to their lead at halftime intermission (47-28) and were still comfortably ahead at the end of the third quarter, 68-42.

The scoring pace slowed for both teams in the fourth period before the Lancers settled for the 81-55 final.

CBU converted 23 of 25 free throw attempts in the game and outrebounded the Vulcans, 45-31. Returning All-American Cassidy Mihalko led her team with 25 points and 12 rebounds.

UHH will travel to Azusa Pacific on Thursday for a rematch with the Cougars. The Vulcans and Cougars played a one-point game earlier this month in Hilo, with APU winning, 66-65.
