Vulcans roll to win over Hawks

OAKLAND, Calif.—The Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans didn't have to wait long to get back on the winning track, less than 24 hours after having a three-match win streak snapped.

After falling in a non-conference bout with Cal State East Bay on Tuesday night, the Vulcans bounced back with a straight sets win over Holy Names on Wednesday, 25-17, 25-15, 25-22 at Tobin Gymnasium.

UH Hilo has now won four of their last five matches, improving to 5-4 in Pacific West Conference action and to 8-8 overall. Holy Names remains winless at 0-17 on the year and 0-8 in conference play.

Senior Siera Green led all players with 15 kills. She only had one error until late in the third set, and finished with a .303 hitting percentage.

The Vulcans played from in front all night. In the first set, they broke a 9-9 tie and never trailed after that on their way to a 25-17 win. In the second set, they jumped out to a 6-2 lead and weren't seriously pressured during a 25-15 victory. In the third set, the visitors led at 10-4 and 17-7, and then climbed to match point at 24-17, but the Hawks made one last gasp, pulling to 24-22 before Green ended the evening with a kill.

UHH setter Basia Sauni had 22 assists, 14 digs and two service aces and her teammate Mina Grant led all players with 17 digs. The Vulcans had 10 assisted blocks, led by Kiley Davis' four. Sierra Allen led Holy Names with eight kills and Maddy Standley had four aces.

After playing four matches in four nights, the Vulcans will get a travel day on Thursday before wrapping up the long road trip with a Friday night rematch with Fresno Pacific. The Sunbirds defeated the Vulcans 3-1 on Sept. 23 in Hilo, and are currently 5-3 in the PacWest, sitting in fourth place.

UH Hilo moved into sixth place in the 14-team conference with the victory tonight over the Hawks.
