LA MIRADA, Calif.—Not much was known about Pacific West Conference newcomer Biola coming into Monday's first-ever match between the two schools.
This much is known now after a 2-0 women's soccer win for the Eagles at Al Barbour Field on Monday afternoon--Biola is pretty good and they are especially tough at home.
The former NAIA school improved to 9-2-1 on the season and to 5-2-1 in the PacWest. They are also an impressive 7-0 at home. With the loss, the Vulcans dropped to 6-5-1 on the year and to 3-4-1 in conference play.
The Eagles won their third straight and the Vulcans dropped their second match on this southwest trip. A win today for UH Hilo would have pulled them into a tie with Biola, but the victory for the Eagles moves Biola up into third place in the PacWest.
On a hot 94 degree day, with the heat index playing even higher on turf, the Vulcans battled tough through the first half, heading into intermission tied at 0-0. In fact, UH Hilo scored in the 15
th minute on a header by
Lucy Maino off a corner kick, but the goal was waved off. Biola also had some solid opportunities in the first 45 minutes, with two shots bouncing off the crossbar while another was tipped over the top by goalkeeper
Jenna Hufford.
But Biola cranked up the pressure early in the second half. They fired two quick shots at Hufford right after the break, one that had to be saved. The third shot found the net when Sarah Jeffries took a cross from Bri Mikalson and pushed it passed Hufford in the 60
th minute.
The Eagles added another score 15 minutes later when Janae Megorden scored her first goal of the season from 18 yards out. The Vulcans got into Eagle territory a number of times in the second half but couldn't break the Biola defense. UHH's last good threat came in the final minutes when
Jaimie Salas' shot had to be saved by Eagle keeper Christina Rodriguez.
That was Rodriguez's only save of the day on her way to recording her fifth shutout. Biola had 20 shots to UH Hilo's nine, with eight shots on goal to Hilo's one.
Next up for the Vulcans will be another tough road encounter, this time at Dixie State on Thursday.
