League leading Argos edge Vulcans, 2-1

KEAAU, Hawai`i—The second leading scorer in the Pacific West Conference added two more goals to his ledger and helped pace league-leading Notre Dame de Namur to a 2-1 win over Hawai`I Hilo on Tuesday night at Paiea Stadium.

Esteban Berumen scored his 13th and 14th goals of the season as Notre Dame de Namur won their seventh match in a row to improve to 13-1-2 on the season and 9-1-1 in the Pacific West Conference.  The Vulcans are now 0-13 this season and 0-10 in league action.

The Argonauts, ranked No. 8 in last week's NCAA Division II West Region poll, have now outscored their opponents this season, 33-15.

All the scoring on the night came in the opening moments of a half or at the very end of one.

Berumen and the Argonauts didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard. In the second minute, Berumen took a pass from Naia Graham, dribbled past a Vulcan defender and drilled a shot past diving UHH goalkeeper, Joshua Jasper, officially at 1:24.

The Vulcans battled tough in the first half, firing three shots towards Argonaut's keeper Javier Santana during a five minute span. At the halftime break, Hawaii Hilo had four shots to NDNU's two.

Like in the first half, the Argonauts wasted no time scoring after intermission.  Less than five minutes in, Berumen converted a penalty kick to give his team a 2-0 lead (49:34).

But as has been the case all season, the Vulcans kept battling. They had 11 shots in the second half, including one by Jesus Ortega that forced Santana to make a brilliant save.

Finally, with just 10 seconds to play, UH Hilo got on the scoreboard. On a free kick, Bradley Doyle passed it to Omar Machado who found the upper lefthand corner of the goal.

With the win NDNU moved three points ahead of California Baptist in the standings. CBU is ranked No. 1 in the west region.

In the final tally, UH Hilo had 16 shots and Notre Dame de Namur had 13.

The Vulcans are home for the rest of the season (three more matches) and will host Dominican on Saturday at 3 p.m.
