Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Vulcans pitch another shutout, blank Hawks 2-0

HILO, Hawai`i—Service held.

Playing back-to-back home matches in must-win situations, the Hawaii Hilo women's soccer team won the back end of their two-match home stand tonight, defeating Holy Names 2-0 at Paiea Stadium.

The victory gets the Vulcans back up the ladder in the Pacific West Conference, improving to 2-2-1 in league play and to 5-3-1 overall. Holy Names, who tied a good Hawaii Pacific team on Saturday (0-0), fell to 0-3-1 in the PacWest and 0-8-1 overall.

It was the third consecutive shutout for the Vulcans, who battled through a 0-0 tie with Azusa Pacific before their home wins over Academy of Art (4-0) and now Holy Names.
The match was played in a steady downpour until late in the game.

The Vulcans found paydirt in the 27th minute. A corner kick from Tiera Arakawa arrived to Kayela Santiago, who headed a pass to Lucy Maino. Maino pushed it in past Hawk goalkeeper Alyssa Lopez for her first score of the season. It was Santiago's third assist on the year.

They got the clincher in the second half when Carlie Reader dribbled past Hawk defenders on the left side of the field and fired a bullet past Lopez. It was Reader's fourth goal of the season and third in the last two matches.

UH Hilo goalkeeper Jenna Hufford recorded her fourth shutout of the season, although her defense forced her to only make two saves on the evening. The Vulcans outshot the Hawks 14-4 in the match, 12 of those shots coming in the first half. The tally for shots on goal was 10-2.

The Vulcans will head to Oahu this weekend to take on rival Hawaii Pacific in a conference match-up. Start time is 12:30 p.m.
