HILO, Hawaii—It's hard to believe after watching the Concordia volleyball team play tonight that they were once in last place in the Pacific West Conference.
The Eagles, who dropped their first five contests in conference play, have now won their last ten after topping injury-depleted Hawaii Hilo on Monday night at the Vulcan Gymnasium, 25-20, 25-11, 25-17. The pre-season conference favorites are now 14-8 on the year and 10-5 in the PacWest.
The Vulcans are 8-13 overall and 5-9 in the PacWest. They played the match without their top three hitters, who are out with injuries—
Siera Green,
Lucee Fitzgerald and
Randi Hunter. It was Fitzgerald's seventh match missed, Green's fourth and Hunter was injured in Friday's match against Notre Dame de Namur.
The Vulcans battled tough in the first set, trailing by just one point at the halfway juncture (16-15). But the Eagles then scored the next four points and never trailed in the set after that. Rachel Flynn had five kills in the first set to pace the visitors.
The tone for the rest of the match was set in the second set. UH Hilo came out of the break scoring the first three points, but Concordia then reeled off 14 straight to take a 14-3 lead. They would roll to a 25-11 win and a commanding 2-0 set lead.
The third set went a similar direction as the Eagles scored the first seven points. They would increase their lead to 12-2, but the Vulcans would make a run and get a close to within three points at 20-17. The Eagles then scored the next five points to secure the match, 25-17.
Flynn and Cindy Tran had 10 kills each to lead the Eagles, and Madeline Deters had 17 kills.
Katrina Johnson and
Kiley Davis had seven kills each to lead the Vulcans.
Mina Grant had nine digs.
This match wraps up a four-match homestand for the Vulcans, who will now hit the road for four matches in the southwest, beginning with a Nov. 6 date at Dixie State.
