BELMONT, Calif.—Hawai`i Hilo senior outside hitter
Siera Green pounded down a career-high 23 kills and her Vulcan teammates again showed the ability to rally back, this time for an impressive four-set win on the road at Notre Dame de Namur.
With the 25-21, 19-25, 27-25, 25-22 victory, the Vulcans picked up their third straight win, improving to 7-7 on the season and to 4-4 in the Pacific West Conference. The Argonauts are now 9-7 on the year and are also 4-4 in conference play.
Although not everything is yet known about first-year head coach
Gene Krieger's team in 2017, a couple of characteristics are rising to the surface. One, they are beginning to show the ability to rally from a deficit, and two, they are proving to be a balanced unit with a number of different players contributing each outing.
Tonight at the Walter Gleason Gym, Krieger's team trailed 24-21 in the third set and were looking dead in the face of a 2-1 deficit. But similar to Sunday night, when they fought off four match points, the Vulcans erased three set points and went on to take the set, 27-25.
And although Green gets the headlines with her 23 kills, seven different players had blocks and kills, many of them stepping up at a variety of key moments in the match.
Kiley Davis was also in double figures in kills with 10 and she added seven blocks.
Ashton Jessee had eight kills with a .389 hitting percentage, along with two blocks and two service aces. Randi Hunt had eight kills,
Basia Sauni had 31 assists and a team-high 21 digs,
Mina Grant added 19 digs and
Amber Tai had 11.
Bianca Alvarez, who led the nation in kills last season, was held to 17 tonight for the Argonauts. She also led her team with 21 digs.
It was Green who helped get the Vulcans on the right track.
In the first set, she gave her team at lead that they wouldn't give back with a kill at 16-14, and then put down the final two balls of the set to her team up, 1-0 (25-21). In the second set, another Green kill gave UHH a 11-5 lead but later in the set, two separate Argonaut runs including one of eight straight points would eventually give the home team a 25-19 win.
It got a little crazy in the third set. After the Vulcans scored six straight points to take a 6-3 lead, NDNU rallied back. They sprinted out to a 17-12 lead, but Green countered with three straight kills to get her team within one point. A few Argonaut points later, Green put three more in the books, but NDNU worked their way back to a 24-21 lead.
Next, it was Davis who stepped up for the Vuls. She kept her team alive with two kills in a row to tie the match at 24-24.
Evelin Solyomvari then gave the visitors a 26-25 lead and Davis finished it off by putting a ball to the floor for the 27-25 rubber set win.
In the fourth, neither team led by more than three points and there were 11 ties on the way to a 19-19 deadlock. Tai made it 21-20 and Davis got the Vulcans to 22-20. Hunt stepped up a point later to make it 23-21 and Davis finished off the night at 25-22.
Green's career night included a .396 hitting percentage and a season-best 19 digs. Her previous high for kills was 17.
The Vulcans will step outside of PacWest play tomorrow night when they take on Cal State East Bay, their third match of five on this northern California trip.
