Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Saints use balanced attack to stop Vulcans, 87-74

LACEY, Wash.—A balanced St. Martin's attack was too much for visiting Hawai`i Hilo to overcome during a 87-74 men's basketball win for the Saints on Tuesday night at the Marcus Pavilion.

Four St. Martin's players were in double figures, led by Luke Chavez's 20 points as the Saints spoiled the return of former SMU standout Trey Ingram, who had 13 points for the Vulcans.

Ryley Callaghan led UHH with 19 points and six assists. Devin Johnson added 12 points and six rebounds, Randan Berinobis had ten points and six boards and Denhym Brooke banked home 10.

St. Martin's improved to 2-1 on the season and Hawai`i Hilo fell to 1-2.

The Saints led for nearly all 40 minutes, minus two possessions early in the first half. The Vulcans hit six of its first seven shots but still trailed by four points at 17-13 five minutes in.

Playing their home opener, SMU built on its lead, pushing the margin to 12 points with eight minutes to go in the half. UH Hilo would battle back to within five points on a Cameron Howell trey (36-31) with a little more than  four minutes remaining, but three-pointers by SMU's Chavez and Rhett Baerlocher before the halftime buzzer made the count 48-37 at intermission.

SMU shot 58 percent from the floor in the first half, including 4-of-6 from three-point range.

The Saints, who lost to the University of Washington by just four points earlier this season, scored twice in the opening minute of the second half to post their largest lead of the game to that point, 52-37. UH Hilo answered with three straight scores from Johnson, but SMU responded quickly with a 7-0 run to stretch the lead to 18 points.

The Vulcans would have to try and play catch up the rest of the night in front of a large SMU crowd of 788. They got within eight points twice but could get no closer than that as the Saints would have an answer for each UH Hilo run.

Saint Martin's had a 37-28 rebound edge, including 13-6 on the offensive end. The Vulcans were also cool from beyond the arch, converting just six of 22 attempts. The Vulcans had problems inside against 6-7 Jordan Kitchen, who had 17 points and 11 rebounds.

UH Hilo will continue it's five games in ten days run through the northwest, playing this Friday and Saturday in Seattle against Central Washington and Seattle Pacific.
