Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Undefeated Cal Baptist sweeps Vulcans

HILO, Hawaii.—Having already clinched the Pacific West Conference title and most likely the No. 1 spot and host role for the west region tournament, maybe the California Baptist volleyball team might have looking ahead to next week's playoffs and past Hawaii Hilo on Friday night at Vulcan Gymnasium.

Not going to happen.

The Lancers looked every bit the part of a champion, taking down the Vulcans 25-12, 25-16, 25-15. The No. 2 nationally ranked squad improved to 27-0 on the season and to 19-0 in PacWest play, with one regular season match left—on Saturday at Chaminade.

The Vulcans lost their tenth straight and are now 8-18 on the year and 5-14 in conference play. They will wrap up the 2017 campaign tomorrow night (Saturday) when they host Hawai`i Pacific on Senior Night. Start time is 7 p.m.

UH Hilo battled tough, but there was little margin for error on this night. California Baptist hit .392 on the evening, including .440 in the second set.

In the first game, Basia Sauni zipped in an ace to start the match and Siera Green put a ball down to give UH Hilo an early lead. The two teams traded points, with the Vulcans down just 11-8 after a block by Katrina Johnson and Kiley Davis. But the Lancers would get in a groove after that, scoring 14 of the next 17 points to claim the set (25-12).

In the second set, the home teams stayed within striking distance through the front part of the game, trailing 15-12 after an Evelin Solyomvari kill, but the Lancers would answer again, scoring 10 of the final 14 points to take a 2-0 lead (25-16).

In the third set, the Vulcans were down 10-9 after another Sauni ace and behind 16-13 after a kill by Amber Tai, but once again CBU saw the home stretch and sprinted away for the final 25-15 count.

Solyomvari led the Vulcans with nine kills, hitting .316. She had five of her kills in the first set.

Madison Witt, one of two Lancer twins (McKenna is the other) that transferred to CBU after playing four years of beach volleyball at the University of Arizona, led her team with 12 kills and a sizzling .579 hitting percentage. Sydney Marks had nine kills and no errors, with a crazy .818 accuracy mark.

The Lancers had just seven attack errors on the night and they fired in nine service aces.

The Vulcans will honor three seniors after tomorrow night's match—Siera Green, Taylor Madrid and Trixie Croad.
