UH Hilo drops final game of roadie to Falcons

SEATTLE, Wash.—Seattle Pacific controlled the boards and led from nearly start to finish in dealing Hawai`i Hilo a 90-59 loss on Saturday night in the final game of the Sodexo Classic.

The host Falcons improved to 3-1 on the season with the win at Brougham Pavilion, while the Vulcans will return to the Big Island after five games in ten days across Washington with a 1-4 record.

6-6 SPU forward Tony Miller led all players with 22 points and nine rebounds. His team shot 58 percent from the field and converted on 11 of 22 three-point attempts.

Seattle Pacific took a quick 6-0 lead in the opening moments of the game and only trailed once the entire night—at 8-7 after a Ryley Callaghan three-pointer just a little over three minutes after the opening tip.

But SPU's Miller answered with his own three-pointer as did teammate Sam Simpson moments later and the Falcons would hold the lead on the scoreboard the rest of the night. They would take a 39-24 margin into the halftime locker room.

Seattle Pacific's Nikhil Lizotte added another pair of treys in the first three minutes of the second half as the Falcons began to distance themselves further from UH Hilo. They would continue to push their lead further and further out, with the final 31-point margin their largest of the game.

The Vulcans, who had a win over No. 19 nationally ranked Western Washington on this trip, had a hard time getting good looks against a good (and big) Seattle Pacific defense.

They shot just 38 percent on the night and were out-rebounded 42-21. The Vulcans also struggled from long range, hitting just seven of 21 shots from beyond the arch.

Devin Johnson led the Vulcans with ten points and four rebounds. Callaghan, averaging 21.3 points per game, was held to just five shots and finished with six points. He was named to the Sodexo Classic All-Tournament team.

The Vulcans will play their home and Pacific West Conference opener on Thursday, November 30 against California Baptist. The tip will be at 7:30, at the UH Hilo campus gym.
