KEAAU, Hawai`i—Apparently in college soccer, every once in a great while, less is more.
The Hawaii Hilo Vulcans played 76 minutes down one man, but still came away with a season-ending 3-2 win over Chaminade on Senior Day at Paiea Stadium.
Jack Stonehouse's penalty kick with 25 seconds left was the clincher in a wild, intense match, and
Jesus Ortega had two first half goals for the Vulcans.
The win means that the Vulcans won two of their final three matches to end the year at 2-14 overall and 2-12 in the Pacific West Conference.
Chaminade, who defeated the Vulcans back in the season's opening weekend (2-1) in Honolulu, wraps the year at 3-10-2 overall and 2-9-2 in conference play.
For one day, ten was enough for the Vulcans. But it almost wasn't.
In a match that surely looked like it was headed to overtime, a hand ball call on Chaminade with 25 seconds left sent Stonehouse up with a chance for the game winner. He didn't disappoint, firing the ball into the left hand corner past Jamin Fonseca, sending the Vulcans streaming onto the field in celebration.
That ended a valiant Chaminade comeback attempt that saw them rally from a 2-0 deficit to tie the match at 2-2 late in the second half.
Earlier, 14 minutes into a scoreless match, after a skirmish at midfield, Vulcan senior
Jake Sagami was issued a red card and ejected from the match. UH Hilo would spend the rest of the day one player short of the Silverswords' 11.
Nonetheless, just eight minutes later, the Vulcans got on the board first. After a shot by
Jonathan Garcia bounced off the post, Ortega slid into the box and tapped ball across the line for the score.
Nine minutes later, Ortega, who also scored twice one week ago in a win over Dominican, took a pass from Garcia again and knocked it home, giving UH Hilo an improbable 2-0 lead that they took into intermission on a sunny afternoon.
In the second half, the rain began and so did UH Hilo's troubles.
That lead would hold until the 71
st minute when Makoto Shoji fired a shot in from 20 yards out to make the count 2-1. UH Hilo's lead completely evaporated nine minutes later when Shoji earned a penalty kick and promptly tied the match with an accurate shot past
Joshua Jasper.
It looked like overtime was inevitable on Senior Day, before Stonehouse's winner. On that play,
Xahil McDonald launched a long pass on a free kick into a crowd right in front of the net, where the hand ball was called. Stonehouse easily converted the kick.
Six yellow cards were issued in the festive rivalry match, and one red. The Vulcans had 12 shots in the match to Chaminade's eight. UH Hilo's
Cassidy Dixon played the first half in the goal and didn't allow a score.
After the match, five seniors that finished their eligibility with the program were honored—
Cassidy Dixon,
Joshua Jasper,
Jake Sagami,
Evan Bacani and
Kyran Johal.
