KEAAU, Hawai`i—Two Hawai`i juniors helped insure that their senior teammates would end their careers as winners during a 2-1 Senior Day victory women's soccer victory over Chaminade on Saturday afternoon at Paiea Stadium.
Jaimie Salas had a goal and an assist and
Tiera Arakawa added a score as the Vulcans snapped a six-match losing streak and completed a season sweep of the Silverswords.
The victory for the Vulcans means that they end the 2017 campaign at 7-9-1 overall and 4-8-1 in the Pacific West Conference. Chaminade wraps up at 3-11-2 on the season and 2-9-2 in the PacWest.
It didn't take long for Chaminade to stake its own claim for revenge. Just 52 seconds into the match Cierra Toledo-Muragin tapped the ball to teammate Nicole Nishiki, who was in a crowd of people just outside the goal. Nishiki headed the ball over the top of the group into the left corner of the net past a diving
Jenna Hufford, whose vision was shielded on the play.
Just like that, the Silverswords led 1-0.
It would take another 25 minutes for the Vulcans to even things up. From about 20 yards out, Salas sliced a pass through a few defenders to Arakawa, who burst ahead to the ten yard line and into a one-one-one situation with Silversword keeper Brandee Lee. Arakawa pushed the ball past Lee, who had come out of the goal, and the match was tied at 1-1. It would remain that way into the halftime intermission.
The Vulcans then scored the go-ahead goal with 30 minutes remaining in the match. Salas picked up the ball about 45 yards from the goal, dribbled past two defenders and simply out-ran everyone towards the net. When Lee had to come out the goal, Salas drilled the ball into the lefthand lower corner for the score, her fifth goal of the season.
The Vulcans controlled play in the second half. They had 11 shots in the final 45 minutes and did not allow any for the Silverswords in the second half. On the day, UH Hilo had 19 total shots (10 on goal), while Chaminade had five, three on goal. Silversword keeper Lane had eight saves on the day.
The Vulcans bettered their win total from a year ago when they finished 5-7-4. After the match, six seniors that finished their eligibility with the program were honored—
Jenna Hufford,
Kayela Santiago,
Milana Wolsleben,
Sophie Satterlee,
Astrid Perez and
Keani Shirai.
