Sea Lions take down Vulcans in three

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans made progress in each set but it wasn't quite enough to win any of them during a 25-13, 25-19, 25-21 loss to Point Loma on Wednesday night in Golden Gymnasium.

With the victory, the Sea Lions earned some revenge and claimed a split in the season series after the Vulcans won last month in Hilo (3-1). That probably seems like a lifetime ago to UHH head coach Gene Krieger, who has seen his team decimated by injury since then and they have now dropped seven straight matches.

The Vulcans are 8-15 overall, 5-11 in the Pacific West Conference while PLNU moves to 10-15 on the year and to 7-10 in conference action.

Still playing without two of their top three hitters (Lucee Fitzgerald and Randi Hunter), the Vulcans played from behind all night. They hit just .102 and had a total of 27 team kills.

Siera Green and Ashton Jessee had seven kills each and Jessee also had four blocks. Mina Grant added 13 digs. Jaime Cymbaluk led the Sea Lions with 11 kills while Holly Persson led all players with 21 digs.

Playing their second of four matches on this road trip, the Vulcans will next travel to Azusa Pacific (Thursday) and Concordia (Friday) before returning for their final two matches of the 2017 season on Nov. 17-18 against California Baptist and Hawai`i Pacific.
