HONOLULU, Hawai`i--Host Chaminade used a 14-point run in the first half and a blitz of three-pointers early in the second half to sprint away from Hawai`i Hilo on Saturday night at McCabe Gymnasium, 101-72.
It was the first Pacific West Conference loss of the year for UH Hilo, now 2-1 in conference play. The Vulcans fell to 3-5 overall. Chaminade evened its conference record at 2-2 and improved to 6-4 on the year.
Trey Ingram led the Vulcans with 19 points but the host Silverswords countered with six players in double figures, including Austin Pope who was just one assist away from a triple-double (13 points, 13 rebounds, nine assists).
Chaminade, who has also defeated California (Pac-12) and California Baptist this year, moved out to a 7-1 lead moments into the game. But the visitors came back to take a 10-9 lead on a
Ryley Callaghan three-pointer and a basket by Ingram (12-9). But the long and talented Silverswords would then go on a 14-0 run over a span of three minutes and thirty seconds to take a 24-12 lead. They would never trail again.
The Vulcans would pull back to within five points (26-21) on a Devin Johnson basket, but Chaminade would race away again. Justin Bridges hit back-to-back three's late in the half and the home team would go into the locker room with a 50-31 lead.
Any hopes that the Vulcans had for a second half comeback were snuffed early by Dantley Walker, who nailed a trio of treys in the first three minutes of the second half. That gave Chaminade a 63-37 lead and they would roll from there.
"Chaminade is as talented a team as you will see in this conference," UHH head coach
GE Coleman said after the game. "If you let them get going, they will make you pay."
While Chaminade was firing on all cylinders, the Vulcans had a hard time finding the range all night, until later in the contest. UH Hilo shot just 32 from the field in the first half converted only 3-of-16 treys in the first 20 minutes. They ended the game at 35 percent from the field and they finished with 10 three-pointers in 37 launches. The were also out-rebounded, 48-33.
Johnson joined Ingram in double figures with 11 points.
The Silverswords hit 13-of-28 three balls, led by Walker and Erik Scheive's four each. Scheive, a 6-10 post, led Chaminade with 18 points. Walker and Bridges had 17, Grant Dressler had 16 and Brett Reed added 11.
The Vulcans will have a short rest, getting back on the court in less than 24 hours. They will play Montana State-Billings on Sunday night at 8 p.m. in the Hawaii Holiday Classic at the Hawaii Convention Center, and will then take on Tampa on Monday evening, also at 8 pm.
