ST. GEORGE, Utah—Danielle Wilson tossed a two-hit shutout and
Bailey Gaspar blasted her sixth home run of the young season to pace Hawai`i Hilo to a 3-0 win over Metro State Denver on Friday morning at the Dixie State Easton Classic.
The Vulcans moved to 6-3 on the season, while Metro State fell to 4-3. The Roadrunners had previously won both of their games in the tournament on Thursday at the Canyons Field Softball Complex.
Wilson, a senior righthander, improved to 3-0 on the season in notching her third complete game of the year. She gave only two hits, both singles, walked only one and struck out two.
Wilson had to feel some security in the first inning when teammate Gaspar hit yet another home run to give her a 1-0 lead. Gaspar equaled her entire round-tripper total from a year ago with the fence clearer.
The Vulcans loaded the bases in the third inning but couldn't score, but turned around to add two more counters in the fourth inning.
Danielle Antolin got the rally started with a single, followed by a Gaspar walk.
Kacie Freudenberger moved them up one base each with a bunt. An error then brought in Antolin and Brinell Kalekini chased home Gaspar with a sacrifice fly.
That's all the help Wilson would need as she cruised to the finish line. She retired the final eight Roadrunner batters she faced.
Kristen Ishii had two hits for the Vulcans, including a double. Gaspar went 1-for-2 with the home run, scored twice and walked twice.
UH Hilo will return to the field at 3 p.m. MST today (noon Hawaiian) to take on Western Washington.
