HILO, Hawai`i--The good news is, Hawai`i Hilo's two losses to Hawai`i Pacific on Sunday at Wong Stadium don't count in the Pacific West Conference standings.
The Sharks swung the bats early and often enough to claimi 21-4 and 9-2 wins over the Vulcans, one day after the two split a conference doubleheader on Saturday. Hawaii Pacific is now 11-3 on the season while Hawaii Hilo drops to 1-3. Both teams are 1-1 in league play.
The Sharks settled the issue early in both games. They scored five runs in game one before UHH could even get to the plate. They would go on to score in six of the nine innings, and in all but one of those innings they would put crooked numbers on the scoreboard. In all, they pounded out 20 hits and were helped by five UH Hilo errors.
On the plus side for the Vulcans,
Marcus Calamese came off the bench to go 3-for-3 with three RBI, driving home two runs with a double in the ninth inning.
Jonathan Segovia and
Jacob Grijalva had two hits each. On the mound,
Drew Ichikawa pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits and fanning three.
In the nightcap, the Sharks struck for six runs in the first inning and two more in the second to make it 8-0 before UHH had sent their fourth batter to the plate. The Vulcan bullpen then settled in after that, with
Thomas Warren throwing three innings and allowing one hit and a run, striking out four.
Chance Colson and
Deric Valoroso, Jr. each pitched a perfect inning as well. Grijalva had a two-run single to pace the offense.
HPU had a pair of stellar starting pitching performances. Blake Flint pitched five innings of shutout ball in the first game, allowing just three hits and striking out five. In the second game, Kyle DeWiler took a no-hitter into the fourth inning before allowing a pair of runs in the fifth. He gave up just three hits in the game.
Hawai`i Pacific had plenty of offensive stars. Mitchell Bumann had six RBI on the day, including a grand slam home run in the second game. Kreston Woods and Jordan Mopas had three hits each and four RBI in the opener. Ryan Torres-Torioka scored seven times on the afternoon.
Hawai`i Hilo will get almost two weeks off before hosting Academy of Art in a four game series at Wong Stadium, March 11-13.Â
