Vulcans go extras again, but this time fall to Seawolves, 9-8

LAS VEGAS, Nev.--Hopefully for head coach Callen Perreira's health, this isn't habit forming.

For the second game in a row, the Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans went extra innings before a verdict was decided, this time falling to Sonoma State in the Desert Stinger on Saturday in Las Vegas, 9-8.

On Friday, the Vulcans went two extra innings before taking down Northwest Nazarene (9-6), but today it was the Seawolves who came out on top, improving to 3-0 in the tournament while UHH drops to 1-1. Hawai`i Hilo will play again tonight (7 pm Pacific) against Western New Mexico.

The Vulcans had plenty of offense again, banging out 14 hits on the day to Sonoma State's nine. Bailey Gaspar went 3-for-5 with a double and home run to pace the efforts at the plate in a game that went back and forth all contest long.

Every time one team would score, the other would answer. The game was tied at 3-3 after three and at 5-5 after six innings of play. In the top of the seventh, with UHH serving as the home team, the Seawolves looked to put the game in the bag on Jordann White's two-run homer, giving her team a 7-5 margin. But the Vulcans answered in the bottom half on a two-run single by Kacie Freudenberger to send the game into extra innings again.

In the top of the eighth, the Seawolves put the pressure on with two more runs--one earned and one not. UHH got one back in the bottom of the stanza on a sacrifice fly by Cristina Menjivar, but left the tying run on second base as SSU pitcher Brigid Ruiz, who threw all eight innings, got the final out of the game for the win.

Freshman Leah Gonzalez pitched the first six innings and gave up six runs, Billi Derleth came out of the bullpen and gave up only one hit and no earned runs in two innings, but was the hard-luck loser. The Vulcan defense struggled for both pitchers, allowing four errors.

In addition to Gaspar's three hits, Menjivar had two hits and an RBI, Freudenberger was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Brinell Kaleikini was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI and a double.
