Coyotes cool off Vulcans, 4-0

LAS VEGAS, Nev.—An offense that had been too hot to touch over the past three days finally cooled off during a 4-0 loss on Sunday afternoon to Cal State San Bernardino in the final game of the Desert Stinger tournament in Las Vegas.

The Coyotes improved to 4-1 on the season while the Vulcans slipped to 3-2.

In UHH's previous four games, they scored a total of 34 runs, averaging just over eight plate crossings a contest. But on Super Bowl Sunday, they ran into an equally hot pitcher in CSUSB's Cassandra Willliams, who won her fourth game while pitching her first shutout of the year.

Williams went the complete seven innings and scattered five hits, walked one and fanned two. She didn't give up a hit after the fourth inning.

The Vulcans had two hits in the first inning, two more in the fourth and also placed two runners on base via a walk and error in the sixth. But they couldn't get any of those runners home, unlike previous games in the tournament that featured a parade of Vulcan plate crossings.

Jessica Brown gave the Coyotes all the offense that they would need in the first inning with a two-run home run. Other than a three-run first inning, Vulcan freshman pitcher Leah Gonzales was effective. She went the distance (7 innings), scattering seven hits, gave up four runs, didn't walk a batter and struck out five.

No one had more than one hit for UHH, with singles credited to Bailey Gaspar, Gonzales, Danielle Pulido, Mari Kawano and Maria Steadmon.

UHH finished the tournament with a 3-2 record and will now prepare for the Dixie State Easton Classic in St. George, Utah. They will open the tournament on Thursday against Colorado Mesa at 5:30 p.m. MST. (1:30 in Hawaii).
