Vulcans win shootout over Sunbirds, 97-92

HILO, Hawai`i—UH Hilo hit a season-high 13 three-pointers  and as it would turn out they would need every one of them during a wild 97-92 victory over Fresno Pacific on Thursday night at Vulcan Gymnasium.

Parker Farris had 29 points and point guard Riley Callaghan added 24 counters and eight assists as the Vulcans snapped a six-game losing streak to improve to 5-10 in the Pacific West Conference and 7-14 overall. The Sunbirds dropped to 4-11 in conference action and 4-18 overall.

The Vulcans led for the entire second half, by as many as 15 points, although the Sunbirds would cut the margin to three points late in the game.

A Farris three-pointer put UHH up 93-86 with 1:02 left, but a Mike Crawley dunk and a TJ Viney full court burst made it 93-90 with 22 seconds remaining. Darius Johnson-Wilson then hit two free throws and Farris added a pair of charity shots as the home team closed things out.

As tight as the end was, the first half was a scoring fest, wildly entertaining on both ends at times. Acrobatic scores on the Sunbird end made for highlight reels, but the best was yet to come on the other end of the court.

Down 21-18, UHH's Farris drained long range three-pointers on three consecutive possessions, giving his team a 27-23 lead. At the seven-minute mark, with the Vulcans leading 32-30, it was Callaghan's turn. He scored on four straight UHH possessions, on a variety of leaners and bank shots. That gave the hosts a 40-30 lead, but they weren't done.

Farris hit two free throws, and then brought the crowd to its feet with a steal and dunk. That capped a 12-0 run, with all points scored by Callaghan or Farris, and none of the baskets were ordinary except for the free throws.

It was unofficially the first dunk of Farris' career, and it was also a wildly successful first half when the 20 minutes was done. UHH led 51-38, shooting 56 percent from the field and 58 percent (7-of-12) from beyond the arch. Farris had 20 points and Callaghan 17.

For the game, the Vuls nailed 13-of-26 three point attempts. They shot 51 percent from the field. In addition to Farris' and Callaghan's scoring, Brian Ishola had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Randan Berinobis added 15 points.

Fresno Pacific shot 57 percent from the field in a losing cause, led by Spencerr Krannitz's 26 points. Crawley added 23.

The Vulcans will host BYU-Hawaii on Saturday night at the Civic, start time is 7:30 p.m.
