IRVINE, Calif.--The Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans had plenty of hits today but not quite enough runs during a 4-3 loss to Concordia on Sunday afternoon at the CU Field.
The Vulcans had 11 hits to Concordia's six but couldn't piece them together at the right time to drop their third straight game to the Eagles and their second consecutive by just one run. The Eagles improved to 9-13 overall and 6-4 in the Pacific West Conference. UH Hilo is now 3-8 overall and 3-6 in the PWC. The two teams will wrap up the four-game series on Monday.
Dylan Sugimoto had three hits while
Phillip Steering,
Jaron Manago and
Reese Kato had two base knocks each for the visitors.
The Vulcans got on the board first in the top of the fourth when Steering doubled and later came home on a Manago sacrifice fly. The Eagles countered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs on just one hit, but UHH answered in the fifth when
Kyle Yamada brought home Sugimoto with another sac fly to make it 2-2.
The Eagles came right back in the bottom of the stanza when Jair Donovan brought home two runners with a double, making it 4-2 for the hosts. The Vulcans would make it 4-3 on their third sacrifice fly of the game, this one off the bat of Yamada in the seventh inning. UHH would have one more solid opportunity to score in the ninth after a Kato single and Sugimoto was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with just one out, and a walk to Steering loaded the bases, but a ground ball double play ended the game.
The Vulcans got solid pitching again in a losing cause.
Thomas Warren went five innings and gave up only three hits and two earned runs, but was charged with the loss.
Alec Telles was great out of the bullpen, tossing three innings and allowing only three hits and no runs.Â
