Vulcans work split with Penguins

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.--Billi Derleth hit a two-run home run and Leah Gonzales pitched a first game gem to lead Hawai`i Hilo to a 5-1 win over Dominican on Thursday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Dominican's bats got hot in the second game to salvage a split with a 8-3 win. The Vulcans are now 9-13 on the season and 3-9 in the Pacific West Conference. The Penguins are 11-15 on the year and 10-6 overall.

Derleth, making just her third start as the DP, hit a two-run shot in the third inning as a part of a three-run stanza for the Vulcans. UHH added another run in the inning via a hit, walk and and a hit batter and that would be all that they would need because of the work of Gonzales.

The freshman pitched all seven innings, gave up just three hits and one run. She walked one and fanned three to improve to 2-3 on the year. She gave up just one hit through the first four innings. Cristina Menjivar had two of her teams six hits, and Brinell Kaleikini had an RBI hit in the seventh inning to help seal the verdict.

The second game was much different. The Penguins scored five runs in the fifth on five hits and took advantage of two UHH errors to score all that they would need. Overall they lashed out 10 hits against three different Vulcan pitchers and the visitors had four errors in the game to contribute to the cause.

Kaleikini and Danielle Pulido had RBI-singles in the game and Kristen Ishii had a pair of hits to lead the offense.

UHH will continue their northern California trip with a Saturday doubleheader at Academy of Art.
