AZUSA, Calif.—Hawai`i Hilo held leads in both games but No. 15 Azusa Pacific rallied back twice to win a doubleheader on Friday at the Cougar Baseball Complex, 12-3 and 5-2.
The red-hot Cougars improved to 24-3 on the year and to 10-2 in the Pacific West Conference, sweeping the series with the Vulcans. UH Hilo is now 3-13 overall and 3-11 in conference play.
UH Hilo built a 3-0 lead in the first game and led 2-0 early in the nightcap, but the Cougars rallied back in each contest to take the lead and win their seventh and eighth straight games.
In the opener, the Vulcans scored one run in the first and two in the second. Singles by
Jonathan Segovia and
Kamalu Kamoku helped fuel the first rally and a single by
Kyle Yamada drove a run in the second.
But the Vulcans couldn't get on the board the rest of the nine inning game as the Cougar bullpen put zeroes on the board. APU pushed four runners across the plate in the fourth to take the lead for good. They lashed out 15 hits in the game.
Yamada had two of UHH's six hits and
Cole Nagamine also had two.
In the second game
Dylan Sugimoto hit a home run early but again the Cougars erased the lead with a four-run fourth, finally getting to freshman
Dylan Spain. And like the first game, UHH couldn't get back on the board again.
Sugimoto had two hits in the game and scored both of UHH's runs.
Austin Forney also had two base hits. Out of the bullpen, Kamoku pitched two shutout innings and gave up only one hit.
The Vulcans will now return home to host Holy Names in a four-game series that begins on Thursday with a 6 p.m. game at Wong Stadium.
