Fernandez, Vulcans, shut out Warriors, 1-0

TURLOCK, Calif.--UH Hilo scored an unearned run in the first inning and Vulcan pitcher Cyanne Fernandez took it from there, leading UHH to a 1-0 softball win over Stanislaus State at the Tournament of Champions on Saturday afternoon at Pedretti Fields.

The Vulcans picked up their first win of the tournament after playing three nationally ranked teams in the last 24 hours. With the victory, they improved to 15-19 on the year, while the Warriors fell to 16-20.

UH Hilo got on the board quickly in the top of the first. Kriten Ishii opened the contest by reaching base via an error. One wild pitch and fielder's choice later, she was on third base and scored easily on Danielle Pulido's double down the left field line. That run turned out to be all Fernandez would need, although she would need some help to work out of a couple of jams.

Stanislaus State's Nicolette Vizcaino tripled in the first inning, but was left stranded. In the fifth, the Warriors pieced together three straight singles, but a line drive double play became Fernandez's best friend, getting her out of that trouble.

In the seventh inning, the Warriors put together a two-out rally with a single and a walk. But Fernandez induced a pop up to get the final out of the inning and the game.

Fernandez improved to 3-3 with the win. She scattered six hits, walked two and struck out three. Anyssa Garvin was the hard-luck loser for the Warriors, allowing six hits, no walks and no earned runs.

Bailey Gaspar and Pulido had two hits each for the Vuls and each of them had a double.

The Vulcans will wrap up play at the Tournament of Champions and complete a long road trip on Sunday, taking on Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Easy Bay.
