Sea Lions tag Vulcans with pair of losses

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—Host Point Loma pounded out 22 hits on the day against a weary Hawai`i Hilo pitching staff to sweep a Monday twinbill at Carroll B. Land Stadium, 14-7 and 8-0.

Point Loma, ranked No. 10 in the latest NCAA Division II west region poll, took three of four games in the series to improve to 23-13 on the year and to 15-9 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans, who won the series opener on Saturday, are now 8-20 overall and 8-18 in conference play.

The first game had a bit of everything, including a few things that neither coach wanted to see.

The Vulcans built a 6-3 lead after just an inning and a half of play—thanks mostly to seven walks given up by Sea Lion starting pitcher Eric Pierce. The Vulcans scored all of those runs with just one hit—a bases clearing double by Jacob Grijalva.

Point Loma began chipping away at that lead with two runs in the third, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take an 8-6 margin into the sixth. In that inning, Phillip Steering looped a single into centerfield to bring home Jonathan Segovia, who had also singled to make the scoreboard read, 8-7.

But the Sea Lions used an error and two more hits to add two runs in the seventh, and then blew the game open in the eighth with four runs (on four hits and one error).

The Vulcans had only five hits in the game, two of them by Grijalva, and they also had four errors. Six different pitchers toed the rubber, with Kamalu Komoku getting tagged with the loss. Colby Kaneshiro led Point Loma with three hits in the game.

In the seven-inning second game, PLNU's Kellen Sheppard pitched a gem to keep the Vulcans off the scoreboard, and also hit a home run and drove in a pair of runs to almost single-handedly get the win for the Sea Lions.

Sheppard, an All-PacWest pick last season as a pitcher and a hitter, launched a two-run shot over the right centerfield fence in the first to give his team all the runs that they would need on the day. On the mound, he had given up a hit to Kyle Yamada in the top of the first, but didn't give up another until the fifth when Austin Forney laced a hit. In that inning, the Vulcans had runners on first and second with no one out, but couldn't get anyone home as Sheppard closed the door.

Sheppard pitched the complete game, allowing just four hits and he walked one. He fanned five and improved to 6-2 on the season.

Steering, who came into the game hitting .451, went 1-for-2 with an RBI, two walks and a HBP in the first game. In the nightcap, he was 0-for-3. Grijalva had four hits on the day to lead the Vulcans.

The Vulcans sent four more pitchers to the mound in the second game, after also using nine total on Saturday—some of them obviously the same players.

UH Hilo will get one day off to rest those arms before heading to Riverside to take on No. 4 regionally ranked California Baptist for Wednesday and Thursday doubleheaders.
