Sharks sweep Vulcans to end softball season

KANEOHE, Hawai`i—Hawai`i Pacific used the one-hit pitching of Jordan Curry in the first game and timely comeback hitting in the nightcap to complete a doubleheader sweep of Hawai`i Hilo in the final games of the 2017 softball season for both schools, 4-0 and 7-5 at Howard Okita Field.

The Vulcans finish the year at 26-22 overall and 17-15 in the Pacific West Conference. The Sharks wrap up the campaign at 29-19 on the year and 18-14 in conference play.

Curry gave up a second-inning single to Danielle Pulido but that would be her only blemish on the day. The Vulcans would twice get runners to third base via errors, but couldn't bring anyone home against Curry, who improved to 7-7 with the win.

Leah Gonzales was the hard-luck loser for UHH, going six innings and allowing only five hits, no earned runs and one walk. She struck out three. But the Sharks scored three unearned runs in the sixth and another in the second inning to give them enough for the victory. Curry didn't walk a batter and fanned five Vulcans. UH Hilo had three errors in the game.

In the second contest, the Vulcans led for most of the game thanks to Bailey Gaspar's four hits and four RBI. The junior third baseman had a run scoring single in the first inning and a two-run single in the second. In the fourth, she added an RBI-double to give her team a 5-2 lead.

But the Sharks gamely fought back. They pulled to within a run in the fifth on three hits and an error (5-4) against Vulcan senior Danielle Wilson, making her final career start.  In the bottom of the sixth, a Shark walk, a sacrifice, and a Vulcan error put runners on first and second with two outs. Wilson battled with Sienna Santiago, working to a 3-2 count before Santiago cleared the bases with a triple and ended Wilson's day as well. Gabriella Fordiani followed with a double to give HPU some cushion, taking a 7-5 lead into the final half inning.

In the top of the seventh, the Vulcans got runners on base via singles by Gaspar and Brinell Kaleikini, but the rally and the game would end there.

UHH had three errors in the game again, putting a dash to their nine hits. Gaspar had the four hits and Kaleikini had two.

The Sharks moved past the Vulcans in the PacWest standings with the double wins (18-14). UH Hilo finished the season tied for seventh place with Domincan at 17-15.
