Vulcan Alumni to return for volleyball weekend

Former Hawaii Hilo volleyball players spanning 40 years of Vulcan history will be on hand this weekend for the annual Alumni volleyball match.

The weekend of activities will be highlighted by a 4 p.m. match between the older Vulcan alumni, followed by a 6 p.m. match featuring the current UH Hilo team and the most recent Alumni players.

On Saturday at 11 a.m., a presentation on the historical significance of the mural in the gymnasium, created by artist Kathleen Kam many years ago, will be given. Kam will be on hand, along with Hall of Fame coach Sharon Peterson, former athletic director Ramon Goya, legendary basketball coach Jimmy Yagi and the Lindsey sisters (Lindel and Sweetie).

"We are looking forward to reconnecting with our historic past," said first-year head coach Gene Krieger. "I think it is very important that our current players understand the significance of where this program has been and what they are representing every time that they put on a Hawaii Hilo uniform."

The Vulcans won national championships in 1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1988. There will be players on hand this weekend span from the very first Vulcan team in 1978 to last year's 2016 squad.

"It's fantastic that we will have players here representing all decades of this great program," Krieger added.

Other weekend events include a Friday evening reception at the Grand Naniloa Hotel (6-8 pm), practices Saturday morning and a 11:30 lunch in the athletic courtyard sponsored by the Vulcan Booster Club.

39 former Vulcan players and coaches have currently signed up for the weekend. For more information, please contact Coach Krieger at gkrieger@hawaii.edu or at 808-932-7174.
