KEAAU, Hawai`i—And just like that, it was over.
After 101 minutes of scoreless play, in a match that seemed to be heading to a 0-0 tie, Academy of Art's Bobby Gutierrez ended a spirited and physical men's soccer match with a blast from the left side of the pitch to the right send of the net, giving the Urban Knights a 1-0 sudden victory win over Hawaii Hilo.
That shot one minute and ten seconds into the second overtime sends Academy of Art to a 2-1 record in Pacific West Conference play and they are now 3-3-1 overall. The Vulcans fell to 0-7 overall and to 0-4 in the PacWest.
It was Gutierrez's first goal of the season.
For the match, AAU had 15 shots, seven of them on goal. UHH had 12 shots, five of them on goal. The Vulcans had more offensive opportunities in the first half, while the Urban Knights had more possessions after intermission.
The Vulcans outshot the Urban Knights in the first half 9-5, with many of those coming in the final 10 minutes before intermission. UH Hilo peppered AAU goalkeeper Kris Jensson, but the freshman from Iceland answered each call.
Bryan Reynoso had a solid look at ten minutes that Jensson punched out. With eight minutes left, it was Reynoso again, but Jensson's dive and save kept the match scoreless. With just five minutes before intermission,
Jesus Ortega and
Jonathan Garcia fired back-to-back shots at the Urban Knights stopper, and he turned both shots away in a crowded box.
Scoring opportunities were fewer in the second half. With 13 minutes left, AAU's Jonny Navarro chipped one at UH Hilo keeper
Nick Williams, but it was right in the junior's hands. With 7:30 left, UHH's
Jack Stonehouse sent a laser from 30 yards out that Jensson slid and stopped.
For Academy of Art, who has won three of their last four matches, including a 2-1 PWC win over Dominican, had seven shots to UHH's two shots in the second half.
The match looked to have its stopping point with four minutes to go in the first overtime, when a collision in the box gave AAU a penalty kick. Alex Walsh lined up for the game winner, but his shot was blocked by Williams and rebounded right back to Walsh. He fired again, but a prone Williams caught the shot and clutched it to his body.
Williams finished with six saves on the night, while Jensson had five.
The Vulcans will turn around for another conference match at home on Tuesday, hosting Holy Names. Start time is 7 p.m.
