Vulcans fall to Silverswords in OT, 2-1

HONOLULU, Hawai`i--Chaminade's Tyler Ebisuya knocked in the winning goal one minute and 47 seconds into overtime, giving his team a 2-1 victory over visiting Hawai`i Hilo on Monday afternoon at St. Louis Field.

It was cause for celebration for the Silverswords in their season opener, and it meant heartbreak for the Vulcans, who leave Oahu 0-2 on the season. The match was a non-conference encounter, as the two teams will meet again later in the season in a Pacific West Conference battle.

Ebisuya's match-winner came moments into the sudden death extra period after the two squads ended regulation play tied at 1-1. He took a through ball and fired it in from 20 yards out on the right side, sending his team into celebration.

That wrapped up an even game that saw Chaminade score first just 13 minutes into the contest on a penalty kick by Nick Kraus. But the Vulcans answered when Bryan Reynoso chipped in a shot over the top of Silversword keeper Bernd Buescherhoff, straight on from 15 yards out. Reynoso, a freshman, was in position after taking the pass and assist from Jonathan Garcia.

The second half was a defensive standoff, sending the match into free soccer time until Ebusuya's (also a freshman) winner.

Chaminade had 11 shots in the match, eight of them on goal. UH Hilo had nine shots, five of them on goal. Vulcan goalkeeper Nick Williams had six saves in the match.

The Vulcans will now have idle time until a four-match road trip on southern California begins on Sept. 16 at Cal State Los Angeles.
