Vulcans sweep host Gators at D2 Showcase

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—For the second time in less than 24 hours, the Hawai`i Hilo volleyball squad tasted victory in a city known for its culinary treats, this time topping host San Francisco State at the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase, 3-0.

The Vulcans, who defeated Alaska 3-1 on Friday night, took down the Gators in their own house (The Swamp), 25-16, 25-20, 27-25. UH Hilo improved to 3-2 on the season, while San Francisco State fell to 3-3.

UHH will wrap up tournament play (and a long road trip) on Saturday with a noon (Pacific time) battle with Cal Poly Pomona.

Junior transfer Randi Hunter (Prairie View A&M) paced the Vulcans with 14 kills, accomplished with a sizzling .419 hitting percentage.

The Vulcans led almost the entire match, although never by a large amount. They broke out to a 4-0 lead in the first set and never trailed in rolling to the 25-16 win. In the second set, the two teams traded leads in the early going before the Vulcans scored seven straight points to take a 15-8 lead. During that run, with Basia Sauni serving, the Vulcans had kills from Hunter, Kiley Davis and Lucee Fitzgerald, along with an ace from Sauni.

The visitors would go on to finish the set off with a kill from Hunter (25-20).

The third set was a battle, with UH Hilo holding a small lead throughout until the Gators tied it at 17-17. The teams went back and forth from there, tied at 22-22, 23-23, 24-24 and 25-25. Kills by Fitzgerald, Siera Green and Hunter got them to extra time, and then two Gator errors salted the match away for UH Hilo.

The Vulcans hit .289 for the match, including .364 in the first set and .353 in the second. Green and Katrina Johnson added seven kills each to supplement Hunter's 14. Sauni had 20 assists and Sha Rae Nui had 14 in UHH's 6-2 offense. On the defense, Mina Grant had 14 digs and Ashton Jessee had five block assists.
