FRESNO, Calif.—A hungry Fresno Pacific team led from start to finish and snapped a five-game losing streak in the process in handling Hawai`i Hilo at the Special Events Center on Saturday afternoon, 105-92.
The victory was the third of the year in Pacific West Conference play for the Sunbirds (3-7) and they are now 5-12 overall. The Vulcans fell back to .500 in conference play (3-3) and they are 4-9 on the season. It was the first of four games in eight days in northern California for UH Hilo.
The Vulcans struggled from the field all night, shooting just 41 percent. Playing their first game without posts
Denhym Brooke (grades) and
Devin Johnson (who played only one minute, injured), the Sunbirds out-rebounded their visitors, 49-29.
Trey Ingram led the Vulcans with 25 points, hitting 8-of-13 shots from the field and all eight of his free throw attempts.
Randan Berinobis added 17 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks while
Ryley Callaghan recovered to finish with 17 and six assists, after hitting only one of his first 11 shots.
Fresno Pacific, who just recently lost to Point Loma on a buzzer beater, led this one from start to finish.
The Sunbirds jumped out to a 6-0 lead and led by as many as 16 points in the first half. The Vulcans battled back, cutting the FPU lead to just five at the halftime break after a three-pointer by Eric Wattree, 42-37.
An Ingram basket three minutes into the second half cut the lead to four points (46-42), but the Sunbirds would answer with a 12-2 run (58-44). They would lead by as many as 17 points after intermission.
UH Hilo cut the lead to nine points twice, once after a
Will Burghardt three-pointer, but could get no closer.
Elijah Hill led five Fresno Pacific players in double figures with 23 points and seven assists. Aamondae Coleman had 21 points and 13 rebounds. The Sunbirds shot 53 percent from the field in the game.
Jared Roffler had a career-best eight points off the bench for UH Hilo. Wattree also had eight points and five assists.
The Vulcans will be back on the court in 48 hours, taking on Notre Dame de Namur on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Pacific time (5:30 in Hawaii).
